I've compiled a fairly decent list of serial numbers and their related dates of import and/or manufacture, and hope this helps those who may be looking for such answers/information.

Sig Sauer Serial Numbers P238

There are discrepancies here and there in regard to sequential numbering and the associated manufacture/import years, which isn't unheard of, and could be for a variety of reasons not related to misinformation. I've done my best to throw out as much junk as possible, while still keeping relevant information - some of which is quite redundant. If there are two X's instead of the date code, it's because I was never able to confirm what the actual stamp was. If there are dashes, the pistol was produced without such proof marks.

I've omitted complete serial numbers in some cases, so as not to upset anyone who may own the actual pistols, that prefer such information not be disclosed. My apologies to anyone looking for dates after the years listed here, but I just never found any interest in newer Sigs. I have a 229R with SN starting AAU-XXXXX.

I don't see a manufacturing date on the label. Blue 'Sigarms' box. Bought new in 2008. It would seem fairly low-numbered in this series. I don't see this prefix listed. Nitron finish.

Manual is 'GB/F'; English/French. I have a 239 with SN starting SA4-XXXXXX from June, 2008. Blue 'Sig Sauer' Box.

You have this prefix, but on 2003 & 2006 models. Two-tone finish. FWIW, my P229R SN does not end in letters.

It's five numerals. This message has been edited. Last edited by:, August 25, 2011 04:57 PM  Location: Fort Heathen, Texas  Registered: February 25, 2008 Ignored post by posted August 22, 2011 08:04 PM.

Recalls [ ] In July 2009, SIG Sauer issued a recall of all P238s sold within a certain serial number range, which they referred to as a 'Mandatory Safety Upgrade'. The reason stated for the recall is that a small number of P238s were built with defective manual safety levers, leading to 'the remote possibility that the gun could fire unintentionally, thus creating a risk of injury or death', although SIG Sauer emphasized that no such injuries had actually occurred. According to SIG Sauer, the recall did not affect any pistols with a serial number that started with '27Axxxxx'.
