I had a big long story typed out, because honestly I am pretty frustrated at this point. Can someone give me a simple yes or no: Is there a free or low cost backup solution for ESXi FREE VERSION that will allow me to do FULL VM backups, and restore an entire VM, even if I say, deleted the whole thing? I would also be interested in low cost or free bare metal backup solutions (in fact, that might be even better - would be awesome to be able to back up our entire esxi host). I realize that what I am asking might be too much to ask, or may not exist. I own Backup Exec Enterprise 2012, but honestly I have had so many issues with it, and it doesn't support Ubuntu at all - meaning I can't back up my web server with it. I've tried Unitrends and Veeam.
Both had the same issue - can't back do a full VM backup on free ESXi. So, is there any way for me to get backups for my VMs using the free version of ESXi, or am I stuck unless I want to pay thousands of dollars that our organization, being a small non profit, just does not have to spend, and that my boss will never justify? It seems like my only option at this point is to get out my Clonezilla CD, attach an external hard drive to the VMWare host, link both the CD and the external hard drive to the VM I want to back up, and boot into Clonezilla to do a manual backup of the VM Image. This primarily sucks because it means my servers will have down time, and I have to come in daily or weekly during off hours in the very early AM, or risk the wrath of people complaining because something is down.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to bitch about these products. It's just frustrating that there is no reasonably priced option to backup my servers on a consistent, normal schedule. You go from 'you can do all this awesome stuff for free!' To 'sorry, we're going to have to charge you $5,000+ for that'. I haven't tested it out in almost 3 years though, so I can't say for sure. Feel free to give it a spin and update the rest of us.
FYI VMware Essentials is ~$500, so there no need to pay thousands of dollars for full VM backup, as you stated in your post. Going to give this a shot!
Just looked at their site, and it looks promising. Josh (Barracuda) wrote: VMware locks down the API (VADP) used to do snapshot backups. Gabrielle is correct you just need to buy essentials and the tools to use something like Veeam to do a backup would work with no issues. I guess I was wrong on the VMWare pricing.
Essentials is either ~$500 or ~$5000 for the different versions. I think $500 a year is probably doable.
It limits you to 3 VMs but I think that might be a sacrifice I am willing to make. Kb2334 wrote: I had a big long story typed out, because honestly I am pretty frustrated at this point.

Define 'low cost'. Or the easy answer, from what I have tried, is no. Protecting your production environment has to be worth $500 for VMware Essentials and Unitrends UEB free (some limits apply). It limits you to 3 VMs but I think that might be a sacrifice I am willing to make. Essentials limits you to 3 hosts, not 3 guests (same limit as Essentials Plus, which is the ~$5000 product, but Plus gets you advanced features like VSA and some other stuff -- with 5.5 just released, I'm not sure which version has what included anymore.). If you need specifics.

It doesnt sound right that you are limited to 3 VM's. It says 3 Servers (which means Hosts) so you should be able to run unlimited VM's on them. You go from 'you can do all this awesome stuff for free!' To 'sorry, we're going to have to charge you $5,000+ for that'. I just used Trilead VM Explorer yesterday to backup 2 VM's in this exact scenario. I've been using it for a few months now and it works just fine.
Downside for the free version of-course is that everything is manual, nothing can be automated/scheduled. I'm restoring my web server to a new 'test VM' with Trilead as we speak, effectively 'replicating' it I guess?
Once it's done I'll power down the main web server, power up the restored VM, and see how it works! If all goes well, this could be the solution I am looking for. Having the backups be 'manual' is no big deal. I have spare time at work, and it honestly takes a few seconds to get it started. The biggest things are - no downtime on the server while backing up, so that I can do the backup during my normal work day and not come in at 3 or 4 AM every day to do it. Or, if the workload on the server is heavy due to the backup, I could at least remote in and get the process going from home during off hours, like 2 AM on a Saturday or something. The fact that I don't have to physically be there is a big plus (and I realize other solutions can do this too, but they don't do it for free!).
I found it kind of crazy that when you try to restore a VM from the 'Backup Explorer' tab, it tells you basically 'Sorry, you can't restore from the Backup Explorer when using the free edition. BUT, you can manually select the file you want to restore in the File Explorer, right click it, and hit restore'. It's like the tiniest extra step to get me what I need.
The restore succeeded, no issue. When I booted it up, VMWare asked if I had copied or moved the VM, I selected copied, it booted with no issue.
This is a great solution for those of us with really small setups (2 VM Hosts or less) that just need to do basic weekly backups, and don't mind starting the process manually. Thanks again for the program advice Gabrielle!
This is the second time you've given me awesome advice in dealing with VMs (first was how to thin out a thick provisioned VM at the command line). For those of you who are in a situation similar to me that just need very basic free backup for your free ESXi, check out.
Art Ralston wrote: This may be a moot point in this particular case at this point in time, but Unitrends' free version of the UEB now works with the free version of ESXi (as of August). It is fully functional for all features with the exception of instant recovery. That requires vMotion and Storage vMotion to work. Free ESXi + Free UEB only allows file level recovery, not a full VM. If you can't boot into the VM (say your linux server did not upgrade correctly and no longer boots properly), you cannot restore files. This effectively means that the free version of ESXi + UEB are basically only useful if you want to do file level recovery.
Trust me, I thought exactly the same as you do - the adverts and announcements from Veeam / UEB lead you to believe that you can do full VM restores. In their defense, it is not a limitation on their software, so much as a limitation on the free version of VMWare (free ESXi locks down the APIs that allow you to do full VM backups / restores).
Trilead get's around this by (from what I understand, this stuff is a little over my head) taking a working snapshot of the server and backing up all necessary files from the VMs folder on the datastore. It then restores it by uploading all that. I thought I was safe in doing an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS by doing a backup with UEB free + ESXi free. The upgrade had issues, and I found out the hard way that UEB / ESXi free do not allow full VM backup (again, not a limitation of UEB, but of how UEB gets its backups from free ESXi). I spent about 16 extremely stress filled hours last Thursday/Friday manually repairing GRUB and the boot process of my Ubuntu server, and in the end I had to mount the 'invisible' file system with a live boot disk, chroot and manually apt-get some of the update files. It was a damn nightmare, especially for a linux noob. TL;DR Free versions of Veeam / UEB paired with Free ESXi DO NOT provide full VM backup / recovery, only file level.
Trilead DOES. AFAIK, GhettoVCB and Trilead are the only ones that work this way, but GhettoVCB seems more complex to set up.
