Hi guys, I've searched in the forum thread for my needs, and I couldn't find any. So here is my problem. I need to monitor the data passing trough serial communication, between local serial port and some device with an application written in vb.net The idea is to see the data without opening the port. For example I want to start the program, choose the serial port that I want to monitor, and then to start some other application that opens the serial port, and start to send data. Another device 'answers', and I want to see the the sent and received data from the first program, and the process that opens the port. I thought that I can use the serial port event 'DataReceived', but actually nothing happens.
I think my approach is wrong. Can someone give me some directions. From information I've read for the serial ports 'Sharing access is out of the question, Windows won't allow it and it fundamentally cannot work'. Apparently if an application is using the serial port the serial port is blocked until the application releases the serial port. Although I've seen mention of third party software which can do this and according to what I've read it is because they use kernel mode drivers (whatever those are) in order to monitor a serial port in use by an application. ' If you only need to read the received data your computers application is receiving you could use a jumper from the receive pin of serial port A for example to a receive only null modem on serial port B for example and monitor serial port B with your monitor program. If you want to monitor both your computer applications transmit data and receive data and 'see' the process that opens the port your computer application is using I am unaware of how you would do that without purchasing third party software.
